Jewel says:
So this lady called me from a movie company and she wanted me to write a song for this new Romeo And Juliet movie that's coming out, with Leonardo DiCaprio. And we all know that he's such a babe I said yes. And so I wrote this song. They didn't want me to sing it, they just wanted me to write it, which I thought was really cool. So I was writing it for a black woman to sing, so it had to be this love ballad. So I sent her this song and she said it sucked. So I'm going to put it on my album and make it a big hit, just to piss her off. It's so nice to be able to deliver on those things. I vindicate everyone.

Jewel says:
I wrote it for a friend of mine that killed himself because he was fat, and he didn't think anybody would ever love him; it's a eulogy for him. I would have liked to tell him that he was wrong, but the world isn't very nice to fat people. The world isn't very kind to people that are unusually figured or disabled or things like that. I can understand why he did it; I don't agree with it, and I wish he wouldn't have. I see how kids are unkind to each other; I see how we're mean to each other that way. A suicide isn't one thing that happens to you that makes you want to kill yourself. It's a million paper cuts in your heart; a thousand cruelties that are accumulative; a thousand dirty looks. And the weight of how we treat each other is very significant.(Interview Answers Atlantic promo-only cd PRCD-8939)
